Brief Haiti note
Sara mentions how heart breaking the stories are for Haiti in her letter reporting on Nita’s progress.
The tragedy is horrendous. But it made me think sort of like the writer of this blog. NOLANik tells about how we who did a disaster up close and personally will never thing of a disaster quite the same. Mostly, we’ll never much believe what we read.
…it is unsurprising to see the American media struggle to get the story straight in Haiti, a city that many of the journalists now there were likely completely unfamiliar with a week ago.
I hadn’t quite grasped this reality until I saw competing headlines, one in the New York Times on Sunday and another in the Washington Post on Monday, telling stories about the impact of the storm on the rich in Port-au-Prince that seem completely at odds with one another.

Somewhat reminiscent of the faking rowing through the streets by the reporter during Katrina, but they forgot and kept the camera on when she got out on dry land less than 10 feet away. Grab the headline and sell the story, and milk this tragic occurrence for all the money it puts in your pocket. I bet you look at this differently than the rest of the world who has not been through a real hurricane, tsunami, volcano, etc. Does anyone know this earthquake destroyed an entire country? Nevermind that it wasn’t a “big power” country. It was home to a people and the entire country is gone. Overwhelming to think about on that scale for me. How is Nita progressing with her knees. I fear it may be a long recovery for her. She’s in my prayers, as you and yours always are.

Linda is so right about this. I gave up on TV when I was in college (30 years ago) b/c I thought it was all sensationalism (and that was back when we were all green!!) I just couldn’t stand the ‘latest and greatest’, and looking back, we’d pale in comparison to what is dished today. (I only know b/c I”m married to a guy who likes to watch it!!)
Thank you, Linda, for thinking about Mom. She is actually doing even better this time than she did 2.5 years ago with the other knee. Yesterday was an unmitigated disaster, so today wasn’t the best, but I’m extremely hopeful for tomorrow. FORWARD MARCH.
